PATNA: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the murder case of Dr. Mohammed Afzal on Sunday arrested one person for allegedly killing the doctor. Police seized one country-made gun and cartridges from his possession.
Dr. Afzal was shot by two bike borne criminals on Friday evening around 7.30pm and had succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Police denied any extortion and ransom as reason behind the murder.
Patna city SP (central) Chandan Kushwaha said, “The arrest is the result of the manhunt that was launched after the murder. The SIT did not find any extortion and ransom connection, rather the doctor was killed due to his personal enmity with Shambhu Kumar, who has arrested from Digha area from his own house.”
According to Shambhu, who talked to the media after he was arrested, said that he along with his two other associates took a shop of electrical goods on rent at the basement of the private nursing home of the doctor. But the doctor locked the shop over some dispute over rent payment which angered them.
“He also took our help for selling off his old car and promised us around Rs. 10,000 as commission but he did not pay a single penny to us. We had repeatedly requested him to unlock the shop but he refused to do so. So we planned to kill him in revenge,” said Shambhu.
The city SP said, “Shambhu was not alone who committed the crime. His close aide Manoj is also on police radar. Both of them have criminal antecedents in the Digha, Danapur area. According to Shambhu, they killed the doctor to take revenge as the doctor kept the shop locked for nearly a year. The gun seized from Shambhu’s possession was used for committing the crime.”
The doctor was the chief medical officer an ESIC located at Bata in Digha area of Patna and was a resident of Rahmat complex.
